Canada Names New Defense Staff Vice Chief; Gen. Jennie Carignan Quoted

The Canadian Armed Forces has named Lt. Gen. Stephen Kelsey as vice chief of the defense staff, succeeding Lt. Gen. Frances Allen.

Kelsey took over the command in a Thursday ceremony at National Defence Headquarters Carling. Gen. Jennie Carignan, Canada’s chief of the defense staff, presided over the event attended by military and civilian personnel.

Carignan described Kelsey as the most suitable candidate for second-in-command in the nation’s armed forces. “Lt. Gen. Kelsey brings a remarkable track record of expertise and unwavering leadership to the forefront,” she said.

A veteran with over three decades of experience, Kelsey held several leadership roles throughout his career, spearheading deployments in Afghanistan, Croatia and Montenegro.

“I am sincerely humbled by the opportunity to serve the Canadian Armed Forces,” the incoming defense team officer said. “As I accept the responsibilities of this appointment, I look forward to the collaborative opportunities it presents and will continue to serve with integrity, accountability and courage.”
