US Approves Proposed Support Equipment, Services for Japan’s Hypermissile

The U.S. Department of State has approved Japan’s potential $200 million acquisition of Hyper Velocity Gliding Projectiles Capability Support and related equipment.

The planned Foreign Military Sale transaction covers hardware and support services to assist the East Asian nation’s HVGP capability, including test preparation and transportation support. If the deal goes through, Tokyo will gain the capability to protect its remote islands from existing and future threats.

According to the DSCA, the proposed sale aligns with the U.S. government’s commitment to ensure its allies are well-equipped with solutions that could maintain international order.

Developed by Japan’s Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency and manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the HVGP uses a truck-mounted booster for launching a gliding warhead with an estimated range of 900 kilometers. The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force is slated to deploy the technology starting fiscal year 2026.

Tokyo also recently received U.S. government approval for another missile-related order. The proposed Standard Missile 6 Block I missile acquisition, once delivered, would provide the Japanese forces’ existing and future AEGIS-equipped warships to protect national and regional order.
