New Zealand Joins US-Led Initiative Focused on Responsible Uses of Space

New Zealand is now a member of Operation Olympic Defender, a U.S.-led initiative that aims to enhance the resilience of space-based systems, deter hostile space activities and prevent the growing number of orbital debris.

As part of the initiative, the island country will assign a New Zealand Defence Force liaison officer to a two-year deployment to U.S. Space Command in Colorado.

In a statement, Judith Collins, who holds several ministerial positions including defense and space, said the decision to join Operation Olympic Defender reflects New Zealand’s commitment to ensuring the safe, secure and sustainable use of space and the resilience of space infrastructure, noting the importance of space-based technologies to national security.

“[Deploying the liaison] will further enhance the NZDF’s experience in space operations and shows New Zealand’s willingness to uphold the norms of responsible behavior in spacem,” the minister said.

“Using space assets enables better communication, faster and better-informed decision making, and helps New Zealand to maintain an effective, efficient, combat-capable Defence Force.”

The United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are already participants in the operation. U.S. Space Command seeks to broaden international collaboration further, extending invitations to France and Germany.
