Spire Global has received two contracts from the European Maritime Safety Agency to provide satellite automatic identification system data services for ship tracking operations.
Worth a total of $9.1 million, the agreements will run for four years and include the delivery of real-time and high-density backup SAT-AIS.
According to John Lusk, general manager of maritime at Spire, the continued partnership with EMSA will ensure accurate vessel monitoring and promote maritime safety in the European Union.
Under the deal, Spire will integrate the required data into EMSA’s SAT-AIS services to enhance the agency’s vessel traffic monitoring operations.
According to the company, its space-based data will enable EMSA to improve its global vessel tracking mission and increase its maritime domain awareness capability.
Spire added that its support for the European agency should prove critical in polar regions where terrestrial AIS network coverage is limited.
Additionally, the data-sharing agreement with EMSA is expected to benefit the EU, the EU member states and institutions and other international entities currently working with the agencies.
Spire announced the latest contract awards following an earlier strategic investment deal with Signal Ocean that saw the latter take a $10 million stake in the Spire’s business.
