Norway Extends Nødnett Radio Network Contract With Motorola Solutions

Norway’s Directorate for Civil Protection, or DSB, has awarded Motorola Solutions a five-year contract to continue managing Nødnett, the nation’s critical communications network.

The contract, valued at $155.6 million, will begin in 2027 and run through 2031, with a possible two-year extension. Under the new agreement, the company will continue to provide operational, life cycle management and technology upgrade services to ensure reliable and secure digital radio communications for over 60,000 users of Norway’s emergency services, including police, fire and medical services.

Nødnett comprises a network of Motorola’s TETRA radios designed to cover all of Norway’s population and operate with neighboring countries’ networks. It also provides coverage in challenging terrain, including mountainous areas and tunnels, and enables Oslo to collaborate with other public safety organizations.

Motorola Solutions Norway, a subsidiary of Motorola Solutions, has been supporting Nødnett since 2012 and is responsible for its operations and maintenance, including support for base stations, transmission lines and the core network.

Michael Kaae, senior vice president of Motorola Solutions, expressed pride in the company’s continued support of DSB. “The TETRA standard is designed for the specific requirements of public safety users, providing proven resilience and reliability that’s trusted by governments globally,” he said.

Expanding its commitment to critical communications, Motorola announced in July plans to open a new research and development center in Ireland. This facility will focus on software development for the company’s land mobile radio portfolio and complement Motorola’s ongoing efforts to support secure communications networks like Nødnett and Ireland’s National Digital Radio Service.
