The U.K. government has launched efforts to establish artificial intelligence growth zones nationwide to accelerate AI infrastructure development and attract private investment. Local and regional authorities are encouraged to propose sites, particularly in deindustrialized areas, with existing power access or potential for major energy infrastructure.
Ideal locations include sites with at least 500 megawatts of power capacity or a clear plan to expand energy supply, deindustrialized areas suitable for redevelopment, or those near major energy infrastructure, such as nuclear reactors, renewable energy sources, or battery storage.
“These new AI growth zones will deliver untold opportunities – sparking new jobs, fresh investment and ensuring every corner of the country has a real stake in our AI-powered future,” Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said in a statement.
The government also seeks proposals from AI data center companies and energy firms, outlining timelines, energy capacity expansion plans, partnership opportunities and support for the U.K.’s AI ambitions.
London has already chosen Culham, Oxfordshire, home to the U.K. Atomic Energy Authority, as the first AI growth zone. This site will explore how sustainable energy sources, such as fusion technology, can power AI development. Other promising locations include Scotland, Wales, the North East and the North West.
Global AI Leadership
With AI growth zones, the United Kingdom seeks to fast-track planning permissions, accelerate AI infrastructure projects and secure essential energy connections to power innovations in sectors such as healthcare. These zones are expected to generate thousands of jobs, attract significant private investment and reinforce the country’s position as a global leader in AI.
This latest initiative builds on the AI Opportunities Action Plan, which has already attracted over $17.4 billion in investments. The plan aims to guide the government in harnessing AI’s benefits and driving its widespread adoption to boost economic growth. It also aligns with Plan for Change, London’s road map for a “decade for national renewal,” which includes initiatives to restore economic stability and establish homegrown energy.
“We’re leaving no stone unturned in how we can harness expertise from all over the U.K. to deliver new opportunities, fresh growth, better public services and cement our position as an AI pioneer,” Kyle said.
