Thales has ordered additional naval radars from Hensoldt for two more German Navy F126 frigates under a contract awarded in 2022. The initial contract requires TRS-4D radars for four Niedersachsen-class frigates and a radar segment for a test center.
Markus Rothmaier, head of naval and ground radars at Hensoldt, said the company is already working on the equipment for the first four F126 frigates, noting that the TRS-4D will offer the German Navy a high degree of commonality.
The TRS-4D, the latest member of Hensoldt’s C band naval radar family, is based on an advanced gallium nitride active electronically scanned array sensor technology with multiple digitally formed beams.
According to Hensoldt’s website, the product delivers a reliable, immediate target alert and automatically classifies targets as high-priority threats. The radar can uphold all functions simultaneously, even in situations with high target density and challenging littoral and coastal clutter environments.
With the additional order, the contract’s delivery period was extended, and its value increased to over $221 million.
Thales will install the product’s nonrotating version with four fixed antenna arrays on the ships and onshore sites to provide a system that meets Deutsche Marine’s operational and combat needs.
