Ukrainian Helicopters Get Hensoldt Self-Protection Kits Against Missile Threats

Hensoldt has received an order from Ukraine to deliver advanced detection and self-protection sensors for the country’s helicopters.

The agreement requires the Germany-based company to integrate its Airborne Missile Protection System into the Armed Forces of Ukraine aircraft.

According to Tanya Altmann, head of the optronics and land solutions division at Hensoldt, the self-protection solutions will shield helicopter crews from a wide range of threats, particularly surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles.

“With AMPS, we are increasing the defense capabilities of the Ukrainian helicopters,” she said.

AMPS features a modular design that allows customers to reconfigure the system to meet their specific operational requirements. Its components include the missile launch detection sensor, an AMPS control and display unit, and an active confirmation system that determines the distance and speed of detected missiles and eliminates false alarms, Hensoldt said.

The new order represents Kyiv’s second purchase of the self-protection kit. In June 2023, it accepted delivery of the first order, comprising 16 AMPS for AFU helicopters.

In a Janes report, Hensoldt confirmed that the latest AMPS order will be installed on a new aircraft platform and not on the same helicopter models that used the system last year.
