The European Defence Agency will support the defense ministries of European Union member states in developing and producing defense capabilities under the newly approved 2024 Long-Term Review.
The latest LTR, which received the approval of 27 defense ministers at the EDA Steering Board meeting, updates EDA’s core tasks to five, with a focus on joint capability acquisitions and collaborative defense research, technology and innovation to keep pace with the changing defense landscape in the region.
“With expanded tasks and a stronger intergovernmental voice, Ministers signal the Agency’s crucial role in bolstering EU defense capabilities,” said EDA Chief Executive Jiri Sedivy.
The latest LTR iteration also includes strengthening cooperation with NATO and expanding EDA’s defense production and supply efforts for Ukraine in response to the ongoing Russian military aggression, Army Technology reported.
According to EDA head Josep Borrell, developing defense capabilities is needed to build stronger and better-equipped armed forces and address existing and future threats.
