Saab To Research New Tech for Sweden’s Future Underwater Capabilities

Saab said it will study new submarine technology under an agreement with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.

The deal requires the defense company to conduct concept development studies for future underwater capabilities.

According to Saab, the preparatory studies will center on advancing existing underwater technologies and exploring new submarines and submarine-related capabilities for Sweden.

In a statement, Mats Wicksell, senior vice president and head of the Kockums business area at Saab, said the research work would ensure that Sweden stays ahead in underwater innovation and technological development in the coming years.

It is important for Sweden to mature underwater capabilities further as submarine operation is a core capability for the Scandinavian country, he added.

The company noted Sweden’s iterative development process to improve its submarine designs and technology.
