The United States is collaborating with Japan to advance unmanned air vehicles by integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning.

On Friday, the U.S. Department of Defense and the Japanese Ministry of Defense signed a project arrangement to work on research and development efforts on Overwhelming Response through Collaborative Autonomy.

The project is part of a joint statement on cooperation the two nations signed in December 2022 to develop Japan’s next-generation fighter aircraft.

The new agreement aims to develop AI/ML capabilities to power UAVs that will fly alongside Japan’s future fighter fleet, a concept that the U.S. Air Force calls collaborative combat aircraft and autonomy.

In October, the U.S. announced collaborating with Japan and Australia to work on next-generation military drones.
