State Department Clears Japan’s $150M FMS Request for Aegis Destroyer Follow-On Technical Support

The U.S. Department of State has approved the Japanese government’s request to procure Aegis-class destroyer follow-on technical support and related equipment.

Lockheed Martin will be the principal contractor for the potential $150 million foreign military sale, which will provide the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Aegis destroyer fleet and computer program test sites with software updates and patches, combat system integration and testing services, engineering and operational support, and other related services.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the proposed sale will ensure that the JMSDF can address any malfunctions or faults in the Aegis Combat System suite and operate the ACS effectively and safely. The expected deal will improve the security of Japan, which is a major U.S. ally and a force for political stability and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific region, supporting the U.S. foreign policy goals and national security objectives, DSCA added.

The FMS will require deploying five U.S. government and two contractor representatives to Japan.
