Elbit Systems Deutschland has contracted Lufthansa Technik to equip the German government’s Airbus A350 aircraft with its J-MUSIC directed infrared countermeasure, or DIRCM, self-protection system.
The contract, signed after a decision by the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Operations of the Bundeswehr, spans five years and represents the first installation of Elbit’s DIRCM system on this type of aircraft, according to the Israeli manufacturer.
The J-MUSIC system can be installed on various aircraft types and incorporates advanced fiber laser technology, a high-frame-rate thermal camera and a high-speed sealed-mirror turret. Elibit Systems said the system is designed to protect aircraft, particularly from man-portable air defense systems, which present a significant threat from terrorist organizations that use them.
Oren Sabag, general manager of Elbit Systems’ Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance & Electronic Warfare division, emphasized the growing threat posed by airborne attacks worldwide. “Our DIRCM technology has consistently demonstrated its reliability and effectiveness, solidifying its position as a market leader and innovator in this important field,” he said.
This recent deal follows a series of contracts that Elbit has secured this month, including a $130 million agreement to equip the Israel Defense Forces with advanced communication systems, as well as two contracts worth $175 million to deliver electronic warfare and DIRCM self-protection suites to a NATO member state.
