British Army Receives Five Saab TAIPAN Weapon Locating Systems

The British Army’s 5th Regiment Royal Artillery has received its order of five TAIPAN next-generation artillery hunting radar systems from Saab

Andy Fraser, group managing director at Saab UK, highlighted how the latest delivery continues the defense contractor’s long working relationship with the military service. Under the deal, the company will also provide maintenance and additional work at its Centre of Radar Excellence in Fareham, England.

“We are immensely proud to support the British Army with our state-of-the-art TAIPAN systems,” Fraser said. “The team at Saab looks forward to continuing our support for the U.K. as it becomes the first user of the new Arthur current generation and next-generation systems.”

According to Saab, TAIPAN is a lightweight, highly mobile weapon locating system capable of being deployed close to the forward line of troops. Due to its design, it could be integrated into any fighting vehicle that is large enough to carry the system’s 3-meter antenna.

TAIPAN, as a replacement for the service’s existing MAMBA system, offers improved capabilities, including rapid deployment and redeployment, high operational mobility and precise counterbattery operations.

Besides the United Kingdom, the Arthur system is also used in several countries, including six NATO member states and South Korea.
