UK Awards 7 Research Contracts to Improve Nuclear Decommissioning Work

The United Kingdom’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has awarded $39 million in grants to develop new, safe and cost-effective nuclear decommissioning techniques.

Seven consortiums who received the funding are studying three areas: supporting the academic research community to improve skills in the nuclear decommissioning sector, promoting research in radioactive waste management and decommissioning techniques, and igniting research initiatives in spent fuel storage.

The consortium comprises over 60 organizations, including nuclear companies, national laboratories and universities.

Kate Canning, head of research and development at NDA, said the agency is satisfied with the quality of research submissions it received. “It’s an exciting time for the nuclear industry and we believe the range of organizations involved in the frameworks will provide a diverse range of experience and knowledge to deliver innovative research supporting the delivery of the NDA mission,” she said.

The $39 million funding forms a key part of the agency’s University Research and Development Strategy
