UK Appoints Adviser to Harness AUKUS Partnership Benefits

The United Kingdom has appointed Stephen Lovegrove as an adviser to the government, focusing on the trilateral security partnership between Australia, the U.K., and the United States.

As AUKUS adviser, Lovegrove will work with partners from the three countries and help the British government harness the partnership’s defense and economic benefits. By the end of October, he will submit a report regarding the U.K.’s progress against the AUKUS objectives, the barriers to attaining partnership goals, and the ways to open new opportunities to maximize AUKUS’ potential.

“AUKUS is the most significant global security partnership the U.K. has joined in decades,” Lovegrove said. “With work that is hugely complex and spanning many years it’s entirely right that an assessment is taken of the U.K.’s progress to date and the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Lovegrove was the U.K.’s national security adviser when the pact was announced in 2021. He was also a previous permanent secretary at the Ministry of Defence.

He was named to the role as the third anniversary of the trilateral pact approaches. The appointment also follows the introduction lat week of export control changes that will enable the AUKUS nations to strengthen collaboration in developing new technologies, competing with adversaries and supporting interoperability in the Indo-Pacific region.
