The New Zealand Ministry of Defence has selected senior officers of the New Zealand Defence Force to lead the country’s navy, army and air force for three years.
Cdre. Garin Golding, appointed chief of the Royal New Zealand Navy, has been the NZDF maritime component commander since 2021. His previous roles include director of maritime domain, deputy chief of navy for strategy and engagement, and project manager for littoral operations capability. Golding, who received U.S. Navy and Marine Corps commendations in 2012, will be promoted to rear admiral. He joined RNZN in 1988.
Brig. Rose King, named New Zealand Army chief, has held the role in an acting capacity since June. She previously served as the deputy chief of the army, director of strategic commitments and chief of staff of Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand. King, the first woman appointed as army lead, will be promoted to major general.
Meanwhile, Air Vice Marshal Darryn Webb was reappointed chief of the New Zealand Air Force, having held the role since 2023. Webb, who joined the service in 1990, served in various leadership roles, including assistant chief of defense, air component commander and deputy chief of the air force.
The three service chiefs, appointed by the governor general of New Zealand on the recommendation of Defense Minister Judith Collins, will report to the chief of defense force and advise the defense ministry lead.
