New UAV to Improve ISR Capabilities at Royal Australian Air Force

Australia has introduced its first MQ-4C Triton remotely piloted aircraft system, complementing its existing crewed P-8A Poseidon fleet as it defends its maritime borders.

The Royal Australian Air Force unveiled the AUS 1, the first of the four unmanned aerial systems, at a ceremony attended by Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles. The system provides the service with the capability to conduct persistent surveillance on the bodies of water surrounding the nation.

Designed and manufactured by Northrop Grumman, the MQ-4C Triton offers real-time ISR and targeting over vast oceans with its 360-degree sensor suite.

Marles said the MQ-4C Triton is part of the government’s commitment to invest in the latest technologies necessary to defend national security. “We must continue to enhance our operations from Australia’s northern bases, and the MQ-4C Triton is a tangible example of a capability that will assist us in achieving this task,” he added.

According to Air Marshal Stephen Chappell, chief of RAAF, the MQ-4C Triton drones complement the service’s existing ISR strategy. “(It) will significantly enhance our ability to persistently patrol Australia’s north and broader maritime approaches,” he said.

Northrop Grumman Australia delivered the MQ-4C Triton at RAAF’s Tindal air base in the Northern Territory in June.
