Lithuanian MOD Orders Air Defense Systems From Saab

The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence has placed an order for Saab’s mobile short-range air defense missile system under a framework agreement with the company and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.

Lithuania signed the agreement in 2023 for the procurement of the RBS 70 NG air defense solution, Defence Industry Europe reported.

Saab received the latest order, worth $123.3 million, after it delivered Bolide missiles in June for the Lithuanian Armed Forces Air Defence Battalion’s existing RBS 70 MSHORAD.

The new purchase award requires the delivery of mobile firing units, mobile radar units, a command and control system, a training package, and the RBS 70 NG trainer over three years beginning in 2025.

Saab will also be responsible for integrating the air defense solution into Joint Light Tactical Vehicles built by American company Oshkosh.

“MSHORAD is designed to ensure the protection of certain facilities, areas and critical infrastructure,” said Laurynas Kasciunas, Lithuania’s minister of national defense.

“The advantage of this system is mobility, so it is an extremely necessary system that will significantly strengthen the capabilities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.”
