Meet La’Naia Jones, CIO and Director at CIA

La’Naia Jones is a prominent national security leader at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). As the Chief Information Officer, Ms. Jones oversees the agency’s IT systems and global communications network.

Ms. Jones is an effective leader with technical knowledge and experience working with people worldwide. Some of her core competencies include integrating and modernizing the enterprise IT infrastructure while improving the Intelligence Community’s (IC) missions. She is also an expert in strengthening collaborations for international or domestic partnerships.

Ms. Jones was born and raised in Maryland. She currently lives in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. She has a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Ms. Jones also finished her M.S. in Technology Management from the University of Maryland.

La’Naia Jones’ Career Journey

Before joining the CIA in February 2022, La’Naia Jones worked in the defense sector for almost two decades. Ms. Jones spent most of her time with the National Security Agency (NSA), assuming various positions. 

After 15 years of service at NSA, Ms. Jones became the Acting CIO of the IC at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. During this period, she led the transformation of the IC Information Technology Enterprise (IC ITE). She also oversaw other parts of the IC Information Environment (IC IE) through cloud capabilities, data sharing, and cybersecurity. In October 2020, Ms. Jones rejoined the NSA as the Deputy CIO for ISSE.

One of La’Naia Jones’ notable contributions to the defense sector was when she supported a four-year mission in Tokyo. There, she visited the government’s global operating locations and provided security and protection of the IC IT landscape.

  • 2002 – 2009: Technology Expert at National Security Agency
  • 2015 – 2016: Chief for Utility Cloud Services at the National Security Agency
  • 2009 – 2017: Technical Director and IT Manager at National Security Agency
  • 2017 – 2018: Chief of Enterprise Transformation and Service Transition at the National Security Agency
  • 2018 – 2020: Deputy CIO for the U.S. Intel Community at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence
  • 2020: Acting Chief Information Officer for the Intelligence Community at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence
  • 2020 – 2022: Deputy CIO of Information Sharing & Safeguarding Executive (ISSE) at National Security Agency
  • 2018 – Present: Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland Baltimore County
  • 2022 – Present: Chief Information Officer and Director, Information Technology Enterprise at Central Intelligence Agency

These experiences became her valuable assets in becoming the CIA’s Chief Information Officer. Ms. Jones ensures that the CIA uses fast-emerging digital technology and improves essential partnerships to advance its goals.
