Rheinmetall to Supply Ukraine With 32 Leopard 1 Systems Under German-Funded Deal

Rheinmetall has secured a contract to deliver 32 Leopard 1 systems to Ukraine starting in 2024.

The German-funded deal will supply the Ukrainian government with 25 Leopard 1A5main battle tanks, five Bergepanzer 2 armored recovery vehicles and two driver-training tanks, the company announced Tuesday.

The agreement also requires Rheinmetall to provide training, logistics, spare parts, maintenance and other support services.

The German arms manufacturer started repairing and readying the Leopard 1 systems at its facilities in Unterluess and Kassel.

The agreement is the latest of Rheinmetall’s continuing support for Ukraine. The company said it previously delivered 80 Marder infantry fighting vehicles to the country.

These hardware supplies will be followed by another 20 Marder IFVs and five Caracal airmobile-capable vehicles. The latter will be shipped between late 2023 and early 2024, according to Rheinmetall.

The group added that Ukraine will soon operate 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks, courtesy of the Dutch and Danish governments.

On Monday, Germany said it delivered 10 Leopard 1 A5 tanks to Ukraine, bringing to 30 the total number of tanks that the war-torn country has received from the NATO member.
