Teledyne to Deliver Multispectral Imaging Tech to Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force

The Japanese government is set to receive the initial batch of Teledyne FLIR Defense’s Star SAFIRE 380-HLD multispectral imaging systems. The delivery under the $20.8 million contract will occur over the next three years. Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force plans to integrate the MIS into the SH-60L helicopter, a modified Sikorsky SH-60 aircraft capable of participating in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare missions.

According to Robert Moss, senior director of business development for Asia Pacific at Teledyne FLIR Defense, the upgrade will improve Japan’s airborne surveillance capability to safeguard its territorial waters and outlying territories.

“[The Star SAFIRE 390-HLD imaging system brings] the most advanced technology to the Japan Self-Defense Forces, enabling them to act swiftly and decisively when needed,” he said.

Teledyne said its multispectral imaging system is weather-resilient and durable and offers high-definition visual and thermal imagery, superior image stabilization, accurate target location, and laser spot positioning.

Japan is spearheading a major military modernization effort as part of a new national defense strategy in response to perceived regional threats. The work includes purchasing new equipment, defense research and demonstrations with allied countries and industry partners, and investments into emerging technologies to strengthen its defense capabilities.
