The Australian Defence Force will see its drone assets expand with the Albanese government’s procurement of new lethal and nonlethal small uncrewed aerial systems worth over $67.79 million from Quantum-Systems and Sypaq Systems.
Quantum-Systems was awarded two contracts to deliver Vector fixed-wing electric vertical takeoff and landing drones and provide training, maintenance, engineering, supply and logistics, and support services. The UAS has a 2-in-1 feature that allows reconfiguring the aircraft into the company’s Scorpion short-range helicopter vehicle.
Vector is designed to transmit real-time, high-resolution video to support surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Capable of being mission-ready in three minutes, it has a flight range of 112 miles.
“We are honored to be selected by the Commonwealth of Australia to equip Army combat teams with our advanced sUAS that will provide them with the enhanced situational awareness and increased force protection they require,” said David Sharpin, CEO of Quantum-Systems.
Canberra also ordered sUAS units from Sypaq, which offers the CorvoX VTOL drone. The aircraft is equipped with a Sony electro-optical sensor, a Flir Boson long-wave infrared sensor, and a NATO-standard video and streaming solution.
The deliveries from each company are expected to be completed in 2025.
