The U.S. Navy has awarded Sweden-based defense and aerospace company Saab a contract to supply a Double Eagle Semi-Autonomous Remotely Operated Vehicle to the Kuwait Naval Force.
The SAROV order, which was processed through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program, is worth $16 million and expected to be delivered by September 2025, according to the online news website Defence Industry Europe.
Double Eagle is designed to be deployed for mine disposal and underwater threat detection, classification and identification, Saab said. Highly maneuverable, Saab’s underwater drones can be launched from any type of vessel at sea or from shore. All Double Eagle configurations can be based in a standard container, offering a deployable solution across various platforms for rapid countermoves against mine threats.
The drone was developed and made in Linkoping, Sweden, with parts sourced from other Saab facilities in the United Kingdom and Denmark.
Erik Smith, U.S. Saab president and CEO, said the Kuwaiti contract introduces the company’s undersea vehicle manufacturing capability to the United States and positions Saab “for greater U.S. market expansion.”
