Lynx Tests to Advance Rheinmetall’s Italian Fighting Vehicle Contract

Italian Army engineers, in collaboration with the defense company Leonardo, will conduct a series of tests on a Lynx infantry fighting vehicle provided by Germany’s Rheinmetall. The testing is part of preparations for a potential supply contract valued at $521 million. The first delivery of these IFVs is expected by mid-2025.

Defense News reported that the tests, which will take place at the Montelibretti testing facility near Rome, aim to evaluate the Lynx’s mobility, armor, firepower and interoperability. Italy plans to acquire 1,050 new Lynx-based IFVs under a $15.4 billion program to replace the Army’s aging vehicles and meet NATO requirements.

A source familiar with the testing preparations indicated to Defense News that Rheinmetall’s provision of the tracked vehicle reflects the rapid progress of the IFV deal and demonstrates support for the Italian Army. Rheinmetall sourced the Lynx for testing from Hungary, the first country to purchase the Lynx IFV.

Additionally, another armored vehicle on Italy’s acquisition list is the Panther KF51 tank, currently being developed by Rheinmetall in a joint venture with Leonardo. This partnership is working on the Panther under an $8.2 billion program, with the first tank delivery anticipated in two and a half to three years. Leonardo will supply the KF51 with the necessary armaments and electronics for the Italian version.

According to the Defense News source, the joint venture, expected to begin operations by the end of January, aims to finalize an initial contract for the first batch of Italian Panthers by summer.
