Israel Opens New AI, Autonomous Systems Office to Streamline R&D Efforts

Israel has inaugurated a new office focused on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems. The Israeli Ministry of Defense launched the AI and Autonomy Administration during a ceremony on Tuesday, led by its director general, Eyal Zamir, and attended by several other government and military officials.

Zamir, a retired major general, has advocated for a collaboration integrating the expertise of the Israel Defense Forces’ technological units, the academic sector and the defense industry. The goal is to research, develop and produce tools that would provide the IDF with a competitive edge on the battlefield.

The new unit will function under the Ministry of Defense’s Directorate of Defence Research & Development. According to a report by Defense News, the Israeli AI initiative is expected to enhance the country’s ongoing Iron Swords campaign against Hamas and Hezbollah. The aim is to create solutions to reduce manpower and costs when conducting military operations.

Daniel Gold, the directorate’s chief, emphasized that the new office will promote closer collaboration among the civilian tech industry, bringing together researchers, operators and other stakeholders to work toward a common objective. “Our mission is clear: to achieve global leadership in military AI and autonomy,” he said.
