Switzerland’s armasuisse procurement agency has selected KNDS Deutschland and General Dynamics European Land Systems to build a new artillery system for the Swiss Armed Forces. It plans to submit the procurement request to Parliament in 2025.
The combination of KNDS’ 155 mm artillery gun module and GDELS’ PIRANHA IV heavy mission carrier will add a new variant to the latter’s wheeled armored vehicle family, already in use by the Swiss Army.
According to Giuseppe Chillari, managing director of GDELS-Mowag and vice president for wheeled vehicles, the new system will significantly increase the Swiss Army’s capability.
The PIRANHA HMC features a 10×10 all-wheel-drive driveline and a five-axle control steering system designed to enable mobility and recoil absorption while shooting on the move, high trench-crossing capabilities, and a turning circle of less than 18.5 meters.
The HMC’s artillery variant, which can accommodate a two-person crew and an optional third crew member, enables the fully automated KNDS gun module to quickly change firing positions in rough terrain. It also allows rapid-fire opening without preparation, shooting on the move, direct aiming and 360-degree fire.
