Bahrain has partnered with Italian manufacturer Leonardo to modernize the Mideast country’s air traffic control and radar systems at the Bahrain International Airport. Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifam formalized the deal on the sidelines of the Bahrain International Airshow.
Under the deal, Leonardo will supply and install its advanced radar technologies at the BIA, also known as the Manama Airport, to provide real-time, high-resolution surveillance across its airspace. These include Leonardo’s new ATCR-33S/NG S band primary surveillance radars and the SIR-S/I dual-channel secondary surveillance radar designed for 24/7 unmanned operations.
Leonardo said it will also provide comprehensive in-service support to ensure the radar system’s long-term performance.
The project is slated for completion by early 2027.
According to the transportation minister, the upgrade aligns with the kingdom’s commitment to meeting the highest standards of safety and quality in air navigation services and accommodating its growing air traffic through modern equipment and facilities, the Bahrain News Agency reported.
Leonardo operates through various subsidiaries and joint ventures, with production facilities in the United States, Poland, the United Kingdom and Italy. Leonardo DRS is involved in testing the company’s radar systems on various aircraft and delivering missile defense solutions for the U.S. Navy and Japan.
