60 Nations Endorse Responsible AI Use Blueprint for Military Applications

The United States and 59 other countries have endorsed a document promoting responsible use of artificial intelligence in military applications, including integrating AI-powered technologies in drones, Reuters reported Tuesday.

The document, introduced at the Responsible AI in the Military Domain summit in Seoul, serves as a blueprint for action to govern AI uses. It has similarities to the one endorsed in the inaugural REAIM event in The Hague in 2023 but the latest call to action contains more concrete steps to address the risks of the technology, make AI more trustworthy and ensure humans have control over the AI decision-making process, particularly those involving nuclear weapons.

The document also highlighted the need to prevent terrorist groups from using AI for the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

China was among the 30 countries that declined to back the blueprint.

According to a recent Australian Strategic Policy Institute report, Beijing has expanded its research efforts in advanced data analysis, AI algorithms, machine learning and adversarial AI. In its defense papers, China noted its plan to use AI for military applications to create a world-class force.
