BWXT Investing $58M to Expand Nuclear Manufacturing Plant in Canada; John MacQuarrie Quoted

BWX Technologies has announced an investment of $58 million to expand its Cambridge nuclear manufacturing plant in Ontario, Canada.

The company said it will spend $36.5 million to increase the existing facility’s footprint by 25 percent and $21.9 million will be used to procure advanced manufacturing equipment over the coming years.

The expansion project will run from the third quarter of 2024 through the second half of 2026, and upon completion, the plant is expected to boost its production capacity and generate over 200 long-term jobs.

John MacQuarrie, president of commercial operations at BWXT, told Canadian broadcaster CBC that the expanded plant will require engineers, project managers, schedulers and planners for its daily operation.

The new investment will prepare the Cambridge plant to fabricate new products and support emerging nuclear power technologies such as small modular reactors, he added.

“By investing significantly in our Cambridge manufacturing facility, BWXT is further positioning our business to serve our customers to produce more safe, clean and reliable electricity in Canada and abroad,” MacQuarrie said.

When the expansion work starts, BWXT’s Projects and Field Services business will move its operations to Kitchener, Ontario, where a center will advance the company’s growth objectives.
