Serbia has partnered with Abu Dhabi to explore the integration of artificial intelligence into the European nation’s technological infrastructure.

The Serbian Ministry of Information and Telecommunications signed a memorandum of understanding with the Advanced Technology Research Council, a government-owned research and development entity, during the World Governments Summit 2024 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Under the MOU, Serbia will adopt ATRC’s Falcon large language models and explore future collaboration opportunities.

The ministry will also encourage Serbian organizations to join the Falcon Foundation, an initiative that aims to advance the development of open-source generative AI models.

The Falcon Foundation, also launched at WGS 2024, received $300 million in funding from ATRC’s applied research pillar, the Technology Innovation Institute.

According to Mihailo Jovanovic, minister of information and telecommunications in Serbia, the partnership will enable the Balkan nation to implement its modernization programs.

“We are taking a step further and thanks to the expertise of the Advanced Technology Research Council, we are starting to use and apply Falcon open source models for the development of AI in Serbia,” the minister said.

It also supports Serbia’s goal of establishing itself as a technological and digital leader in southeast Europe, he added.
