Ukraine and the United Kingdom have begun consultations on security guarantees, which Kyiv hopes to secure before the end of 2023.

Andriy Yermak, Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, confirmed the consultations in televised comments on Friday.

The Ukrainian government is pursuing security guarantees from global powers to ensure that Ukraine will receive adequate support to defend itself against Russian aggression. The Eastern European nation has applied and is awaiting confirmation to join NATO.

Ukraine also began security guarantee consultations with the United States in late July. In previous comments sent through the Telegram messaging app, Yermak shared with reporters that officials from several countries were eager to discuss Zelenskyy’s peace plan if Russian troops evacuated all Ukrainian territories.

The consultations follow a long-term security framework for Ukraine presented by the Group of Seven leading industrial nations during the 2023 NATO Summit in Lithuania. The G7, which includes the U.S. and U.K., renewed its commitment to stand with Ukraine amidst the invasion and contribute toward bolstering Ukraine’s economic stability.
