NRC Chair: Discussion Continues on Establishing a New Department to Supervise International Nuclear Exports

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s plan to establish a new branch focused on exports is “a discussion that we’re still taking a look at,” NRC Chair Christopher Hanson said.

Hanson has stated that the uncertainty arises from the fact that its international programs office is already performing many of the tasks that the proposed branch would handle.

The Advanced Nuclear for Clean Energy Act allows the agency to create this new division but it must inform Congress about its planned activities regardless, including the budget request, import and export licenses issued, and international regulatory cooperation concerning nuclear reactors and materials.

The ADVANCE Act, signed into law by President Joe Biden on July 9, mandates the NRC to adopt several actions that would address various issues affecting the agency, including recruitment and retention of workforce and processes observed in license applications.
