France Acquires Nokia’s Submarine Networks Business

France has acquired Alcatel Submarine Networks from Nokia, with the State Participations Agency representing the country in the Dec. 31 transaction.

Nokia said it will retain a 20 percent share in ASN and have board representation to ensure a smooth transition until the French government takes over the Finnish company’s remaining interest.

The technology company said the divestment allows it to focus on core markets and growth opportunities within its Network Infrastructure portfolio. The transaction also demonstrates Nokia’s active portfolio management, a key pillar of its strategy that also includes growing its customer service provider business, building new business models, and securing business longevity.

According to Nokia, ASN, which discontinued operations in the second quarter of 2024, is well-positioned to benefit from the growing subsea cables market.

Among Nokia’s recent strategic moves to support its Technology Vision 2030 include leading the SUSTAIN-6G project, a European Commission-funded initiative exploring technology for creating microgrids, advancing digital health, enabling smart agriculture and other applications.

Also, Nokia recently partnered with India’s Sterlite Technologies to develop and deploy advanced enterprise connectivity solutions in India, with a focus on delivering high-speed connectivity for 5G, the Internet of Things, generative artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies.
