Israel has greenlit the procurement of new advanced naval vessels and armored vehicles, following recommendations from the Nagel Commission on force building.
The government established the commission after the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks to review the country’s defense acquisitions and enhancements.
The multibillion-dollar deals approved by the Israel Military Procurement Ministerial Committee will include five next-generation Reshef-class missile corvettes to replace the aging Sa’ar 4.5-class ships in service since the late 1960s. Israel Shipyards will manufacture the new missile boats, supporting local employment.
Additionally, the committee approved the purchase of hundreds of new Joint Light Tactical Vehicles for the Israel Defense Forces. The IDF has since deployed the JLTVS ordered from Oshkosh Defense via a foreign military sale in 2023.
The projects will now be submitted to the Knesset, the country’s legislative body, for final approval.
Among Israel’s most recent defense acquisitions include a $5.2 billion order of F-15 fighter jets from Boeing to enhance IDF’s air capabilities and $164.6 million worth of heavy-duty tank trailers and related equipment from Leonardo DRS.
