Japan Requests Sale of Rolling Airframe Missiles From US

The U.S. Department of State has approved Japan’s request to acquire 212 RIM-116E RAM Block 2B tactical missiles and related equipment. The RAM Block 2 missile uses passive radio frequency and infrared guidance to destroy anti-ship missiles.

RTX will be the principal contractor of the possible $360 million foreign military sale, which also includes RAM guided missile round packs, operator manuals and technical documentation, logistics support and assistance, and support in setting up an intermediate-level maintenance facility.

According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the RAM missiles will improve the Japanese government’s capability to address current and future threats targeting its territory and maintain the security of Western Pacific air and maritime domains. It said the proposed acquisition does not come with known offset agreements.

Tokyo has been modernizing its defenses as part of a new national security strategy in response to changes in the regional and world security environment.
