A new army training facility for NATO soldiers has opened at a U.S. Navy base in Virginia. The 15,000-square-foot Army Combat Fitness Test site at Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads provides capabilities to conduct the fitness tests and features sports facilities, including volleyball and pickleball courts, to enhance the quality of life for military personnel.
French Air Force Gen. Philippe Lavigne, NATO’s supreme allied commander transformation, attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside U.S. military officials to mark the opening Thursday.
Greg Freeburn, the deputy U.S. national liaison representative to Lavigne, said the AFCT is “a prime example of international, interservice cooperation.”
“The Navy provided the space, and the Army invested in the construction and equipment. It’s a win-win for everyone involved including U.S. soldiers, sailors, NATO service members and their families assigned to Hampton Roads here in Norfolk,” he said.
According to U.S. officials, there are plans to improve and expand the facility, including the addition of pavilions and grills to host unit organization days.
