Saab Books Sweden’s $146M Giraffe 4A Radar Supply Contract

Carl-Johan Bergholm on Saab contract win in Sweden

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration is purchasing Saab’s Giraffe 4A radar systems valued at $146.3 million for delivery from 2026 to 2027. The systems provide an upgradable software-based mobile sensor to further boost Sweden’s ground-based air surveillance, Saab said Tuesday.

Giraffe 4A is designed as a multifunctional system offering users various capabilities, such as identifying and tracking several objects simultaneously. It can be deployed for air and sea surveillance or military air traffic monitoring and control.

Carl-Johan Bergholm, senior vice president and head of business area surveillance at Saab, said the company’s radar supplies an “important piece of the puzzle” in Stockholm’s new sensor system program. “Giraffe 4A strengthens Sweden’s mid-range sensor capability and makes for a long-term capability development,” the company executive noted.

Other Radar Contracts

The Giraffe 4A order follows Sweden’s procurement of the Saab mobile short-range air defense system in late 2023, valued at around $29 million and expected for delivery between 2024 and 2026. MSHORAD, which features a mobile radar unit based on Saab’s Giraffe 1X, can track and counter air threats, including drones and armored helicopters.

In December, BAE Systems tapped Saab to supply multiple Giraffe 4A radar systems to U.S. Air Forces in Europe under a $48 million contract. The radar is also among the Saab systems Dutch shipbuilder Damen Naval ordered in February for the combat platforms of the Colombian Navy’s new Plataforma Estratégica de Superficie frigate.
