Taiwan Taps Auterion to Supply Software, AI for Defense Drones

Lorenz Meier on Auterion contract win in Taiwan

Auterion will integrate open-source software into Taiwan’s defense uncrewed vessels to help expand its autonomous unmanned systems capabilities. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday to formalize the agreement and outline a joint road map.

According to Adm. Shi-Chiang Lee, president of the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, the decision to partner with Auterion can be linked to the self-governing island’s desire to gain battle-tested technology that offers autonomy, security and flexibility. Auterion’s software is already on drones in Ukraine.

Under the strategic partnership, NCSIST will gain access to AuterionOS, an operating system for uncrewed systems. The complete onboard software platform powers drones to conduct advanced missions by enabling autonomous actions and ensuring connectivity with the command center to relay real-time data.

The collaboration also covers the installation of Nemesis, an artificial intelligence-enabled drone swarming platform.

Collaboration for Resilient Defense

Auterion CEO Lorenz Meier said the deal with the defense research agency reflects the significance of open architectures and international collaboration in ensuring a resilient defense strategy.

“NCSIST is the cornerstone of Taiwan’s defense industrial base, and we are proud to be contributing advanced autonomy solutions to help defend democracy,” he said.

The company has been developing a standard OS for military industries with Rheinmetall under a long-term cooperation deal with the German arms manufacturer.
