Former MI5 Chief Joins Vertical Aerospace Board

Andrew Parker Vertical Aerospace board member

Vertical Aerospace has appointed Andrew Parker as the latest member of its board of directors, effective June 2. Parker brings years of national security and intelligence expertise to his new role, strengthening the British aerospace and technology company’s presence in the defense and national security segments.

Parker was director general of MI5 from 2013 to 2020. While carrying out that role, he also served as director general of the National Security Council, leading the organization’s technology modernization efforts. He was later appointed Lord Chamberlain by Queen Elizabeth II in 2021, managing royal ceremonies and state events for the Royal Household. The executive has also been a nonexecutive director at Babcock International Group since 2020.

“Vertical’s commitment to pioneering next-generation aircraft, powered by breakthrough electric and hybrid technologies, offers real potential to transform both civil and defense operations,” Parker said in a statement announcing his appointment. “I look forward to supporting the team as they unlock the full value of these innovations.”

The latest addition to the Vertical Aerospace board follows a British plan to inject up to $27 million to develop unmanned systems and electric vertical takeoff and landing technologies in the country. At the time, Stuart Simpson, CEO of Vertical Aerospace, said the investment will help realize the company’s goal of operationalizing its aircraft in three years.

“Flying taxis will transform the way we move — making it quicker, quieter and cleaner to travel while connecting communities and supporting essential services,” the chief executive said. “The U.K. has an incredible opportunity to lead the world in this new era of aviation, delivering not just greener transport but real economic growth and skilled jobs.”
