US Approves $1.3B Sale of RTX Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles to Poland

RTX AMRAAM

The U.S. Department of State has approved Poland’s proposed acquisition of the RTX-made AIM-120D Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles and related equipment and services, estimated to cost $1.33 billion.

The potential Foreign Military Sales transaction covers 400 AIM-120D3 AMRAAMs, 16 AIM-120D3 AMRAAM guidance sections, including either Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Modules or M-Code, and one AIM-120 AMRAAM Instrumented Test Vehicle.

RTX’s AMRAAM is a lightweight missile that uses combined inertial guidance, midcourse updates and onboard active radar to track, target and complete the intercept. It can be integrated into several fighter aircraft, including the F-15A/B/C/D/E Eagle/Strike Eagle, the Eurofighter Typhoon and the F-22 Raptor.

The proposed sale also includes several non-major defense equipment items, including AMRAAM missile containers, Common Munitions Built-in-Test Reprogramming Equipment, and spares and repair parts.

According to the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the State Department determined that the potential deal will improve the European nation’s military capabilities, aligning with the United States’ foreign policy and national security objectives to empower NATO in ensuring political and economic stability.

The U.S. approval aligns with Warsaw’s growing investments in improving its military capabilities. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute named Poland one of the biggest defense spenders in central and western Europe in 2024, with $38.0 billion, or 4.2 percent of its gross domestic product.
