The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration has ordered additional lightweight torpedoes and torpedo tubes from Saab in a $135.4 million deal to enhance the country’s naval defense.
Designated Torped 47 by the Swedish Armed Forces, the Saab Lightweight Torpedo is designed for deployment from submarines, ships and helicopters. Saab said it features a fully digital homing system and supports both wire-guided and fire-and-forget operations. The SLWT can reach speeds exceeding 40 knots, operate for over an hour and travel to depths greater than 300 meters.
“We are proud to continue to support Sweden in its efforts to modernize underwater weapon systems in order to protect the Baltic Sea region,” said Mats Wicksell, head of Saab’s Kockums unit. “This state-of-the-art system is providing the Swedish Armed Forces with increased capabilities, including torpedoes, spare parts, training systems and technical support.”
The agreement marks Sweden’s second order for the torpedo, following the first deliveries in 2022. Saab aims to deliver the new torpedo units in 2026.
Earlier this year, Saab secured another $72.5 million contract from FMV to modernize Sweden’s coastal defenses. The contract involves upgrading existing RBS15 Mk2 anti-ship missile systems to the newer, truck-mounted RBS15 Mk3 variant, also with deliveries starting in 2026.
