European Union member states have appointed Maj. Gen. Andre Erich Denk as the new chief executive of the European Defence Agency, effective May 16.

Kaja Kallas, EDA head and high representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said the German military official has years of logistical and operational experience and a deep understanding of the region’s defense requirements. “Under General Denk’s leadership, the agency will play a key role in ensuring Europe’s readiness for the challenges ahead,” she added.

Denk most recently served as EDA deputy chief executive, a role he assumed in February 2023. As deputy, he closely worked with the former chief executive, Czech diplomat Jiří Šedivý, on all political matters and led an effort to acquire 155 mm ammunition in aid of Ukraine and EU member states.

Before joining the agency, Denk was the director of logistics at the EU Military Staff, commander of the Joint School for Logistics, and head of the Joint Logistics Support Group Coordination and Training Center.

He holds a diploma in mechanical engineering and graduated from the Bundeswehr Command and General Staff College in Hamburg and the EdG war school in France.
