US Clears $280M Patriot Air Defense System Sale to Romania

Patriot missile launched

The U.S. Department of State has approved a potential $280 million foreign military sale of a Patriot air defense system to Romania, reinforcing the European country’s defense capabilities as a NATO ally.

The proposed sale comprises a Configuration 3+ Increment 3 radar, an engagement control station, two launching stations, modification kits, generators, encryptors, logistics and technical assistance. RTX and Lockheed Martin are the primary contractors. According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, 10 U.S. government and contractor personnel will deploy to Romania for up to three years to assist with system fielding and training.

The U.S. government said the sale aligns with its national security objectives by strengthening Romania’s capacity to counter current and future threats. The Patriot system, designed to counter advanced long-range cruise and tactical ballistic missiles, is expected to integrate into Romania’s existing defense framework without shifting the regional military balance, DSCA said.

The deal is the latest among Romania’s recent U.S. military deals, including a planned acquisition of 32 F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin and a $110 million purchase of RTX Sentinel radar systems.
