Finnish telecommunications company Nokia has completed a trial of a seamless 5G standalone slice handover while moving using three different networks in three countries, paving the way for enhanced secure 5G communications for defense applications. The test was done in cooperation with telecommunications provider Telia and the Finnish Defense Forces.
“Seamless 5G slice continuity over country borders is a breakthrough for military operations, enabling secure and reliable communications for collaborative missions that extend beyond national territories,” said Tommi Uitto, president of mobile networks at Nokia.
During a recent Nordic exercise, the demonstration used Nokia’s 5G Core software as a service, AirScale 5G base stations fitted with ReefShark system-on-chip technology and Telia’s commercial network. It showcased a crucial capability in modern battlefields, where warfighters see themselves operating beyond national borders and cooperating with allied forces.
According to Maj. Gen. Jarmo Vahatiitto, chief of C5 at the Finnish Defense Command, the trial showcased the possible uses of 5G for military operations and how it could help gain better communication capabilities with NATO partners.
