Denmark and its political parties have signed an agreement to enhance the nation’s maritime defense capabilities. Through the Danish Defence Agreement 2024-2033, the government is expected to boost the Danish Armed Forces’ naval abilities by purchasing several vessels and unmanned systems to bolster maritime surveillance.

The signatories include the Danish Democrats, the Conservative People’s Party and the Social Liberal Party.

Danish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen said the nation is facing a more complex and growing number of threats never seen before. “[There is a] need for greater awareness of what is transpiring throughout the Kingdom of Denmark – both on and under the sea,” he added.

Under the pact, the Danish government and the political parties mutually consent to invest more in fortifying the Scandinavian nation’s ability to defend its territorial waters against aggression coming from Russia and other foreign adversaries. The acquisition of several major pieces of defense equipment covered in the plan includes four marine environment and mine-laying vessels and 21 ships for the Danish Home Guard.

The agreement also aims to strengthen maritime surveillance of critical infrastructure and acquire underwater drones and other autonomous units to help with above- and under-the-sea surface monitoring.

“With the agreement on the Navy Plan, we are initiating a range of urgent acquisitions to ensure the Danish defense at sea can counter these threats,” the defense chief said.
