British multinational BAE Systems hosted a ceremony to formally open the Applied Shipbuilding Academy in Glasgow, Scotland, with Princess Anne of the United Kingdom in attendance.
The academy, which has been offering courses since September 2024, is designed to train the company’s workforce on the essentials of shipbuilding and other maritime-related topics. Participants get a hands-on training environment, allowing them to experience real-life work in the facility’s ship mockups. The training site also has a multipurpose flexible learning hub and a modern trade hall.
Simon Lister, managing director of BAE Systems’ Naval Ships business, said the academy provides the company’s over 4,500 employees with an opportunity to pursue innovative career-long learning and skills development. “This will help ensure we have a pipeline of talent available to deliver the best possible equipment to the Royal Navy and our allies around the world as they operate in an increasingly challenging and complex environment,” he added.
BAE Systems is also investing in another Glasgow location to boost its capabilities, which is part of the firm’s $393 million investment. The Janet Harvey Hall shipbuilding facility in Govan is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
