Amentum to Study Environmental Impact of Czech Small Modular Reactor Program

Czech power firm CEZ has tapped Amentum to conduct environmental impact assessments on two proposed sites for Rolls-Royce small modular reactors in the Czech Republic.

The Chantilly, Virginia-based contractor said it secured the EIA deal in public bidding after it completed initial studies on the sites: one in Temelin, already home to a nuclear station, and another at the coal power station in Tusimice already set for decommissioning later.

Potential Risks and Impact

Under the EIA contract, Amentum will report on potential radioactive hazards, waste management, accident risks and impact, and water and noise pollution control. CEZ will conduct a public hearing and an independent assessment of Amentum’s reports before the Ministry of the Environment considers its formal approval.

CEZ’s SMR project was shaped in October, with the Czech company signing a strategic partnership contract with Britain’s Rolls-Royce SMR.

SMR Prospects

Andy White, senior vice president for Energy and Environment International at Amentum, said the company combines its global nuclear experience and long presence in Czechia to support the SMR project. “Our objective is to help CEZ and Rolls-Royce take a huge step along the critical path toward demonstrating the effectiveness of SMRs for decarbonizing electricity production,” he said.

The EIA contract follows the company’s selection in March as the program and project management delivery partner for Sizewell C, a new nuclear power station planned for the United Kingdom.
