Accenture Expands Into Maritime Sector Via Fincantieri JV

Global professional services company Accenture is expanding its footprint in Italy through a joint venture with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. The JV, Fincantieri Ingenium, is geared toward developing advanced digital capabilities in the cruise, naval defense and port infrastructure sectors.

Initial development efforts include Navis Sapiens, a digital ecosystem for optimizing ships and onshore infrastructure operational efficiency and life cycle management. The project will develop digital applications and artificial intelligence-driven platforms with strong cybersecurity features, along with a marketplace for technology exchanges with third parties to further enhance the development of the maritime ecosystem.

Connectivity at Sea and Onshore

Accenture and Fincantieri expect the Navi Sapiens service to start by the end of 2025. Through the platform, Fincantieri Ingenium plans to pursue opportunities to provide connectivity between ships and onshore facilities for real-time data exchange. The effort will bank on Fincantieri’s naval technology expertise and Accenture’s digital capabilities, including service design.

Pierroberto Folgiero, Fincantieri CEO and general manager, said combining the two companies through the JV would enable ships and infrastructures to be increasingly connected, more efficient and sustainable. “With Fincantieri Ingenium, we strengthen our leadership position in technological innovation applied to shipbuilding and the naval engineering industry,” he added.

Creating New Value

Teodoro Lio, Accenture Italy CEO, described Ingenium as a “significant step forward in maritime innovation” that exemplifies a collaboration to create new value. “With Fincantieri Ingenium, we are combining our respective strengths to shape new operating models that will transform maritime operations through innovative technologies,” the executive said.

Fincantieri and Accenture agreed to establish the JV with a memorandum of understanding in July 2024. Ingenium’s establishment is subject to customary compliance regulations and follows two other acquisitions in Italy last year: Intellera Consulting, which specializes in public sector consultancy services, and Fibermind, a network services company.
