Ultra Maritime Secures $62M Contract to Equip Canadian Frigates With Missile Protection Capability

Undersea warfare systems provider Ultra Maritime has secured a $62.3 million contract from Lockheed Martin Canada to deliver three shipsets of Surface Ship Torpedo Defense for the Royal Canadian Navy’s River-class destroyer, or RCD, program.

John Gallagher, vice president and general manager of Ultra Maritime Canada, said the company is honored to lend its expertise to its industry partners and provide customers with life-saving capabilities.

“Having previously secured a three-shipset production order to supply hull-mounted sonars for the RCD program, as well as supplying 12 UWSU towed arrays into the Halifax-class, Ultra Maritime is pleased to play a pivotal role in delivering state-of-the-art anti-submarine warfare capabilities to the Royal Canadian Navy,” he said.

According to Ultra Maritime, its SSTD combines a single in-line tow and automatic threat alerting to ensure navies worldwide receive unparalleled performance in a small footprint while delivering a high probability of detection and a low false alarm rate.

“We are well placed to execute the SSTD program utilizing expertise across our global Ultra Maritime lines of business, led by the team here in Dartmouth,” said Steve Rogers, senior director of RCD programs at Ultra Maritime.

In early March, Ultra Maritime disclosed the results of a collaboration with the University of Liverpool to explore applications of machine learning to enhance the performance of anti-submarine technology fitted with passive sonar systems. The two entities said ML significantly supports improving signal extraction in noisy environments, enabling greater tracking performance.
